Idiom of the Day – At Sea

In today's video, how sick will you be when you sway at sea?

Today’s idiom comes from French, and it offers us a surprising take on seasickness.

What do you usually do when you’re seasick? You lose all colour, you probably sway on the spot, and if you’re very, very unlucky, you worship the gods of the turbulent waves by leaning overboard to proffer your sacrifice.

…But not so much where French sailors are concerned.

Getting violently, horrendously seasick? Yeah, they’ll say you’re counting your shirts.

Now that’s phlegmatic enough to make Fleur Delacour’s nickname make sense, n’est-ce pas?

Idioms are the beating heart of a language. Wanna keep up as I explore more?
